Welcome to Weston Buick GMC
THE WESTON STORY
In 1959, Jim Weston, founder of Weston Buick GMC was living with his young family in North Portland, working for the Oregonian as a paper route coordinator, in charge of several boys who ran small routes.
In September of that year, having been told by an acquaintance that he would make a good car salesman, Jim applied for a sales position at Vic Bowman Pontiac GMC in Oregon City. He sold cars there for 8 years before being promoted to the position of Sales Manager and, shortly thereafter, to the position of General Manager. In 1974, Jim left his position with that company, seeking to acquire a dealership of his own.
In February, 1975, he assumed control and ownership of the Pontiac GMC Jeep dealership in Gresham and Jim Weston Pontiac was born. The dealership was located on Burnside and operated at that facility for 12 years. Under the previous ownership, the dealership had lost money for nineteen consecutive months and was in last place for sales volume in the Northwest region.
During the very first month of operation, Jim Weston Pontiac posted record sales for that location and moved from last to first place in the region. Since that time, Weston Buick GMC has been and remains the number one volume Buick GMC dealership in the entire Northwest. Jim’s vision was, and is, of a dealership that is in the people business.
As a company, we live by the principle that if we care for and completely satisfy our customers, they will in turn care for us by referring friends and maintaining relationships with us. That principle was significantly tested in 1986 and 87 when the owner of the building, in spite of verbal commitments to give Jim an opportunity to purchase the property, refused to even renew the lease and the dealership was given 5 months to vacate the premises.
With dozens of employees, no building, no property, and faced with a city government which required as much as two years to even approve a plan for a new building or business, the prospects for a bright future were considerably dimmed.
In 1987, Weston moved out of the facility on Burnside and continued operations at six separate locations around town. Miraculously, in less than 6 months, Jim was able to find and acquire property, hire an architect and have building plans approved for a new facility at our current location.
After only 5 months “on the road”, Weston Buick GMC moved into its new home on Stark Street in May, 1987 and has remained consistently among the top dealerships in the nation for sales, and more importantly, customer satisfaction. In August of 2000, Kia was added to the Weston family of franchises and the tradition of superior customer care has propelled that franchise to one of the top Kia dealerships in the nation, joining Weston Buick GMC as one of the elite automobile dealerships in North America.
After a string of very successful years Weston Kia opened a new state of the art dealership in 2007 next door to our luxurious Buick GMC facility and together make up one of the finest combinations of top quality vehicles available in the nation. Weston is proud to serve our fine community in many ways and we look forward to earning your business with top quality service and sales for many years to come.
